Mount Merapi, in central Java Indonesia, has erupted on Tuesday 26 oktober 2010, spewing plumes of hot ash and rocks. These hot ash and rocks with lava caused major destruction to the nearby villages. This is not the first eruption because days after that another bigger eruption has made hundreds thousands people have to be evacuated. The area with diameter 15 – 20 km is very dangerous.  Lots of people are dead because of the hot lava and buried under the hot ash and rocks. People that survived loss their houses, rice fields and stocks. Lots of children and babies, old people, pregnant woman lives in a temporary shelter. They need food, clean drink water, clothes, blanket, masker, and clean sanitary system. They have severe breathing difficulties from inhaling volcanic materials. The hospital did not have enough equipment to treat all the injured. Even though help has come from many places, the amount of food and clean drink water and clothes and clean sanitary system is still needed.

Mount Merapi eruption is one of the three natural disasters to hit Indonesia over the past few days. Hundreds of people are still missing days after several remote Indonesian islands were hit by a deadly tsunami in Mentawai, a tiny island near Sumatra. At least 343 people have died on the Mentawai Islands and almost 400 are unaccounted for, officials say, amid fears they were swept away by the wave.

The flash flood that swept through Wasior in West Papua was estimated to have killed more than one hundred people and injured hundreds of others. Offices, houses, schools and other public facilities were damaged by water, rocks and logs.

We, the Indonesian Student Organization in Groningen, want to organize a charity events to collect money to help the victims of the Mount Merapi eruption, the tsunami in Mentawai Island and the flash flood in Wasior in West Papua. We hope to be able to ease the pain and suffering of the victims. We just can’t stay still and quiet seeing people suffering and fighting for the life of their own and their families. They need our help. The bigger the fund we raise the more help we can give to the people. We need your support and help us!

Berg Merapi, centraal Java Indonesië, is op dinsdag 26 oktober 2010 met veel geweld uitgebarsten. De vulkaan spuugt wolken hete as en stenen, dat grote schade aanricht aan de nabijgelegen dorpen. Honderd duizenden mensen moesten het gebied verlaten, omdat het te gevaarlijk is om daar te blijven. Mensen hebben familieleden verloren, hun huizen zijn ingestort en ze zijn hun bron van inkomsten (rijstvelden en vee) kwijt. Veel mensen, waaronder veel vrouwen met kinderen, wonen nu in tijdelijke kampen.

De vulkaanuitbarsting was niet de eerste ramp die Indonesië getroffen had in de afgelopen dagen. Een tsunami heeft vlakbij Sumatra ook al ellende gebracht. Verder heeft een overstroming in het westen van Papua schade en dood gebracht.

De vele slachtoffers hebben voedsel, schoon drinkwater, kleding, dekens enzovoorts nodig. Ook zijn er ziekenhuisvoorraden nodig om de vele mensen met ademhalingsproblemen te behandelen. De Indonesische studentenorganisatie in Groningen wil graag een evenement organiseren waarmee geld kan worden ingezameld voor de slachtoffers in Indonesië.

We willen graag deze evenement op de Grote markt in Groningen op 11 december 2010 van 13.00 – 17.00. Deze evenement zal bestaan uit lezingen en fotorapportages, een modeshow, optredens van een band en traditionele dansers en het verkopen van Indonesische hapjes. Met deze actie willen wij aandacht voor de slachtoffers in Indonesië en geld inzamelen om daarmee hulporganisaties daar financieel te ondersteunen.

Hoe meer geld we kunnen inzamelen, hoe meer hulp we kunnen bieden aan de slachtoffers. Steun onze actie en help mee!
