Halal bi Halal Event in Groningen: ‘Back to Indonesia’

Friday, 23 September 2011, the warm indonesian atmosphere was covering the city of groningen, Netherlands. All of the Indonesian people there came and gather together to attend the so called ‘Halal bihalal’ event. Halal bi halal is social gatherings and is part of Eid ul Fitr (suikerfeest) celebration. Do you know why it’s called Halal bi Halal? Well, the word ‘halal’ is Arabic which literally means ‘acceptable’. The 2010 eruptions of Mount Merapi began in late October 2010 when Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta and Central Java (Indonesia) began an increasingly violent series of eruptions that continued into November. Seismic activity around the volcano increased from mid-September onwards, culminating in repeated outbursts lava and ashes. Large eruption columns formed, causing numerous pyroclastic flows down the heavily populated slopes of the volcano. Merapi’s eruption was said by authorities to be the largest since the 1870s.

JAKARTA – Het dodental door de uitbarstingen van de Indonesische vulkaan Merapi is gestegen tot 304. Bedolven onder het as zijn enkele lichamen gevonden. Anderen bezweken in ziekenhuizen aan hun aandoeningen.
Dat heeft de Indonesische rampenbestrijding zondag laten weten.
Ongeveer 400.000 mensen moesten door de vulkaanuitbarsting hun huizen verlaten. De helft van hen is sindsdien teruggekeerd. De internationale luchthaven van Yogyakarta moest vanwege de as bijna twee weken gesloten blijven.

Just to help even though this contribution might not mean a lot. After a few times visiting the refugee spot in Jogja, I felt that there are primary needs of the refugee that has not been fulfilled and has not been served well.
